Did you like them?   OK, feel comfy now? Great! Let’s have a chat then. :-)

Let’s start with the nitty-gritty.  I was born in Jakarta, on 5 February 1983.  My father comes from Bima, West Nusa Tenggara and my mother comes from Tegal, Central Java. I love literary fiction, poetry, movies, any kinds of music, traveling, soccer, and international food (Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, to name a few).

Hang on. Before you scroll down, let me make it clear that I have no slightest intention to bore you to death. So if you find it no longer interesting, you’re free as a bird. Oh, you’re still here? Awesome!

What do I need to tell you? Oh yes, I love learning.  I completed my master’s in TESOL at University of Canberra in July 2009, and  I submitted my PhD thesis in Linguistics (ANU: Australian National University) in December 2012. Although I’ve learned much from formal education, I believe that I learn more from Life. So if you believe in the phrase “The University of Life”, then we stand in the same ground. I do too. I believe that learning from formal education may make you a good living, but self-education will make you a great life. Are you on board? Excellent!

Let’s talk about dreams now. Although I was once a political activist, a former president of various youth organizations including PPIA (Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia di Australia/The National Board of Indonesian Student Association in Australia), and an academic by training, now I’m a man in a new episode of life. I dream of becoming an international author. A native speaker of Indonesian and Javanese who also speaks some Arabic, I aspire to publish in English.

My first novel, Malula, was published in Indonesian language in Indonesia in 2010. Although it was well received by Indonesian readers, Malula could not go on to a second print due to the publisher’s poor management. The small publisher went bankrupt in 2011. They haven’t even paid me any royalties. My dream of paying my father’s debts using the royalties vanished into thin air.

Sad, of course. But I moved on. I realized the most important reason why I write. Like an ant who wishes to erect the castle of humanity, through writing I want to seize the unlimited opportunities to learn, fulfill my unquenchable thirst and everlasting passion for literature, and share my thoughts to international audience the way Kahlil Gibran, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Jalaluddin Rumi, Khaled Hosseini, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Paulo Coelho do. Clearly if life must have a mission, then mine is to illuminate the heart of humanity.

I’ve made plans for my creative endeavors. Last month, I completed my first English novel project, The Disciple. The manuscript is now undergoing an appraisal. But The Disciple is not the only book I want to write; there are other projects too. You may find the complete list of my book projects here. For the publications of these books, I have learned my lesson. I am no longer interested in publishing with a small house; I am now aiming for one of the big players: HarperCollins, Penguin, Random House, or Bloomsbury. That way I can also reach the international audience like I have always wanted.

I know it must be extremely difficult. The challenges are innumerable. There are thousands of emerging writers out there who struggle to get published,  much less make their reach a global audience. Besides, English is not my first language. Even though I’ve been teaching English at University of Canberra English Language Institute (UCELI), Australia for five years, my vocation is no guarantee.  As a non-native speaker of English, I am error-prone. There’s a good chance that I will make errors every now and then, just like other non-native speakers. Now the real question is: How’s it going to be possible for me to achieve my dream?

Kahlil Gibran came to the rescue. The exotic handsome man on our left was a Lebanese; he spoke Arabic as his native language. He moved to the United States when he was 12 and published The Prophet in English when he was 38. Other authors? Well, on the list we’ve got Joseph Conrad (Polish), Vladimir Nabokov (Russian) and Khaled Hosseini (Afghani). So there you go.

The life of Gibran, Conrad, Nabokov, and Hosseini teaches me one thing: The beauty of life is to love and its purpose is to learn. Learning to love every bits and pieces of creative writing is a seemingly attainable skill I will need to practice. The truth is that HarperCollins and Bloomsbury are not going to offer me contracts if I’m happy the way things are. Success will not come if I stop learning. I have to spend more time on reading, despite my hectic schedule. One cannot become a great author unless they are an avid reader, I’m sure you all know that. Also, my writing should be in constant refinement. They will never reach perfection until they get published.

I joined the Blogosphere primarily because I believe that it is part of learning. Honing my writing skills can be so much fun when I could share what I write and connect with people who have penchant for literature and are passionate about life. I am blessed by the wonderful supports and appreciations I’ve been getting from my  fellow bloggers and kind readers. The ‘Awards’ page were made to showcase the blessings these wonderful people have been pouring out onto me.

Hey, it’s interesting you can stand listening to me this long. Aren’t you bored? No? Great! Would you like to be my new friend? If so, just imagine my right hand is reaching out to you for our first virtual handshake. Good, it’s official now.

    • ‘Malula’ is a commercial failure, it’s a publishing catastrophy. Read here: http://subhanzein.me/about/books/malula/

I have just completed ‘The Disciple’ , aiming for a publication with either Penguin, HarperCollins, Bloomsbury, or Random House. A trilogy of The Disciple awaits to be written. I’m thinking of rewriting ‘Malula’ after that, with a very different approach. Thank you for your visit. Blessings and love to you, xoxo

    • Hi Mas Aan,

Thank you very much for commenting. You are one generous soul. I hope yourblog can continue the awesome work you have been crafting.

It’d be a great thing for a lot of people out there to know more about our country, our culture, the beauty of Indonesian landscapes, and how wonderful our people are.

Doa tulus dan jabat erat semangat dari saya buat Mas Aan.

      Salam hangat,

      Subhan Zein

        Sekali lagi terima kasih.

        Salam dan doa dari Jogja,
        Aan

Many blessings and much love to you. :-)

  42. Hello Subhan,

Apa khabar? To avoid “Sambai kuching bertanduk pun tak berjaya”, I agree with your following statements: “Success will not come if I stop learning. I have to spend more time on reading, despite my hectic schedule. One cannot become a great author unless they are an avid reader, I’m sure you all know that. Also, my writing should be in constant refinement. They will never reach perfection until they get published.”

That you have high aspirations to become a writer is admirable. I would like to wish you all the best in your future endeavours. I also would like to congratulate you on your superb blog and the quality work that you have done, and the thoughts that you have put in. Bravo!

Cheers and have a great weekend! Selamat Petang/Malam from Brisbane, Australia.

Thank you very much for your lovely words. I am glad that I can now reply to my readers’ comments, but soon I will have to return to my study. I hope the weather in France has been wonderful for you.

  44. Hi Subhan

First of all I want to thank you for your support in visiting and liking soulsnet.com. When I started blogging a couple of months ago I didn’t know what to expect and didn’t think anyone was ever going to come and visit me!! You were, in fact, one of the first. So a big thank you for the encouragement. I am linking to you in tomorrow’s post from soulsnet featuring your site as a very special one that I know my readers would enjoy. I hope you will visit and enjoy too.

    Thanks again.

    Love Corinne

  62. Oh the wonders of youth – You my young friend could be my son. The best to you in all your endeavors. I have been writing poetry for over 40 years. Some published but not professionally. But I’m not worried. I write for the love of writing. You might be interested in the free writing community http://www.writingourwayhome.com
That is why I started the blog you have tagged and visited. The premise was to notice and write a small observational piece everyday…I started in Jan 1, 2011 and haven’t stopped. I have learned about Lunes – American haiku, Elfjes a small Dutch form, and traditional haiku, tanka and renga – Japanese forms are also favorites. As well as longer free verse – those can be found on another site. Again the best to you, write everyday and enjoy what you do.
    Cheers.

  81. Firstly thank you for the welcome, the coffee and the cakes. The coffee was stronger than I am used to but thanks anyway.
Yes I kept reading right to the end and then the long scroll down to here to make a comment. It was a good job that I had had a good strong coffee just before the long trip down otherwise I would have forgotten what I was going to say.
Nice to meet you. I also teach English and I also try to write. I am now going to look at some of your writing. I have not yet been brave enough to put any of my shorts or flash fiction on my blog, just in case it is awful.
Very nice to meet you and please come over for apero some time.

    • Hi Kerry,

  88. Beautiful blog, Subhan! It’s a pleasure to meet you. Thanks for following! I love that we have a deep admiration for Kahlil Gibran in common! To sit at his feet would have been a rhapsody in and of itself. His reflections on love make my heart swell, and his outlook on mankind (and womankind) and civility makes me so hopeful.

  90. Your sheer ambition and passion is very admirable; you seem to have such clear vision and a good heart. Also, a beautiful blog, I don’t know how I missed it ’til now!…sometimes it’s hard to keep up! I admire your recognition of Bukowski and Rumi; diverse tastes keeps a mind open and alive…diverse, but equaled in heart. You mentioned liking a certain kind of memoir–involving awakening. I was wondering, when visiting my blog did you notice my memoir, “Blue Star Exploding”?…It’s a highly personal and completely honest story which means the world to me, and I’m getting more outgoing about sharing it, merely with the desire to share an amazing experience with others: I am relatively new to the world of computers and blogging, and I don’t know how to leave a link on a comment page…but there are several places on my blog where you can find it and click on! Keep after those dreams, Subhan, your attitude of mind is inspirational. I’ll be back for more…I’m going to link you to my blogroll right now for easy access!

    • Thank you very much for your lovely and generous comment, my friend! I really appreciate it. :-)

Yes, my interest spans from Jalaluddin Rumi to Pablo Neruda, from Kahlil Gibran to Elizabeth Gilbert, from Paulo Coelho to Pramudya Ananta Toer and Yasunari Kawabata. I loved them! :-)

Of course, I will be visiting your blog, my friend and I’ll be checking out your memoir. I’m writing one at the moment, but alas, I’m still not sure whether to maintain the form as a memoir or a novel. Hope I could find the perfect form once the first draft of the manuscript is completed. :-)

Thank you for following me, and I do hope that your visits here have been and will always be an enjoyable experience. Thank again and have a lovely weekend, my lovely friend! :-)

      Subhan Zein

    • Oh, wow, aren’t you so sweet! Thank you very much for your encouragement; it gives me the extra energy I need to produce works as remarkable and brilliant as theirs. :-)

I wish I’d had the courage to write at your age. I didn’t find my voice until a couple of years ago, and now? I can’t shut up. So keep doing what you’re doing with that sweet smile, and thanks for visiting my site!

I have great admiration for those who speak more than one language because I am trying to learn another now, Spanish, and it is very difficult.
    Andrea

  95. Hello Subhan,
Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving your very nice comment. I truly appreciate it. Here is my 2012 toast I wrote for all my blogger friends. You may have missed it but I think that it can be a part of the entire year; especially, since we have just met. Enjoy …!!!!

    http://insidethemindofisadora.wordpress.com/2011/12/31/a-toast-for-the-new-year/

I did read your entire about page. I found you quite ineteresting. Your philosophy is like my own. I believe in the University of Life, as well. I think education is of the utpost importance however many do not do as well in school because of learning issues. It is then that life gives you other tools to learn from. Friends, books, elderly with their many words of wisdom and hard knocks from unfortuante choices. All of them add up to a world of knowledge if you can utilize them properly.
I plan on visiting many times and have signed up to receive updates of your newer work along the way. No doubt, I will have lots of wonderful things to read. Your about page had me captivated from the beginning. I love learning about other people and their cultures.
Thank you for the tasty cup of coffee. It is my favorite beverage for sitting and reading blogs. So thoughtful of you to make it.
    Namste,
    Isadora

    • Oh, wow, Isadora, you read everything from the beginning till the end? You’re my new friend!
      Thanks for that! :-)

Yes, it’s a great cup of coffee, isn’t it? After this imaginary version, I hope I could make a real one for you one day. :-)

  104. I’ve been in & about your blog for the past hour or so. It might sound weird but I rather found the comments made by your readers the most compelling aspect of it all. It is remarkable how you draw out such candid responses from such diverse persons. (I’m your first Nigerian comment, by the way) I suppose that is a true reflection of your personality. It seems to comes across in your writings that you as overt as the prints suggest. It is a rare attribute I’ll encourage you to harness to your advantage everytime you write. So now, do sent my coffee over, would you?

    • Oh, wow! Thank you very much for your sweet comment, my lovely friend! :-)

  114. My mum used to always tell me, “If you dream it, you can do it!” I’m a long way from achieving all my dreams, but it sure hasn’t stopped me from continuing to dream bigger every day. I think you will most certainly achieve your dreams some day, and when that novel gets published, I will be one of the first to buy it! :D
Also I know wat you mean by formal education Vs the University of life so to speak. I feel I learn a lot from both, and that all my real life experiences and travels help me form a more insightful view point and opinion in class! Fair play on doing a PHD…once I’m done with this masters I will DEFFO have had enough with studying…time to dive back into the real world! :)

    • Hi Janet,

You are such an amazing person! Knowing that you’re going to buy my book when it’s not even published yet, I was deeply touched when I read your comment this morning. Thank you very much for having the faith on me! :-) And thank you, thank you, and thank you for your encouragement.

And don’t worry about studying, I’m sure you will successfully conquer the battle of obtaining your master’s with Erasmus Mundus. You’ve been doing it for a while, so it’s not very long for you to obtain it, is it?

      Subhan Zein

  115. Hello! You write well though your English is not your native language :). Will look forward to read your future posts. Welcome to the world of blogging!

  116. I love Kahlil Gibran, he is one of my favorite poets, found him at the Asian Section of our library when I used to work there as a student librarian when I was in college. And Khaled Hosseini, wow, he is the best. I love his two books The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. I even wrote book reviews on those two.

BTW, thanks for visiting my blogs and liking and leaving comments there. Will explore your site soon!

    Arlene

  118. I read all the way to the end and must say that I am very impressed.
I agree when you saying avid reading improves linguistics (paraphrasing). I’m always one that is known to have my head in a book..even though I am a native English speaker..I’ve always wanted to widen my vocabulary and therefore have always been reading a lot.
My love of reading and writing spurred from an early age when my parents and teachers found that at 6, I had a reading age of a 12 year old..and I guess it all started from there.
I’ve toyed with the idea of writing a book..but poetry is much more befitting of me..as with a book..I wouldn’t even know what I had to say that would be so interesting for anyone else to want to read..let alone grappling with the mundane topic of trying to figure out what I would end up writing about.
    For now..I remain content.

Thank you for stopping by my blog. It’s just a space where I can ramble..what surprises me is that people take to it quite well..something I never expected. The only thing is that sometimes when I blog..I feel a little restricted at to what I can present to my audience (whomever my audience may be) only because once you put something out on the internet..it’s out there forever..
I’ve also found that your English is awesome..maybe even a little more awesome than some of the people that I know..language is amazing..but I never allow that to be a barrier to communication with the people I meet on a daily basis.

I think you are well on your way to becoming amazing..well..If you aren’t already there yet :P

    • Thank you very much for your lovely comment. I am so happy that you have given me such positive encouragement. I am so grateful. You are a very wonderful person! :-)

I could feel the positive energy you are trying to say, and I do really appreciate it. To be honest, sometimes I just find it hard that my own people, they don’t really appreciate what I’m doing. I mean there are some people who couldn’t care less with what you’re doing, especially when you have big dreams to create a better world. So when I read a comment such as yours, I was like “Wow!” I couldn’t believe it. That’s why it took me so long to reply to it, because I didn’t know what to say.

I believe that my academic life has given me great opportunities to write in English. Yet, I fully realize that creative writing is a totally different kind of writing. It’s a totally different planet. You speak a different language in a different planet. For this reason, I believe that I need to read a lot. There’s nothing like reading good literature. I feel I learn a lot, and by doing so, I learn how the great authors create their masterpiece.

Thank you once again. And I do hope you have a wonderful and happy weekend, my lovely friend! :-)

  120. “My real professors are those who teach me with everything I need in life. Who are they? Well, first and foremost, most of them are jerks.”–Isn’t that the truth. Sometimes it’s challenging but I try my best to see these people with love and gratitude for whatever lesson the Universe thinks I need to learn from them.

I enjoyed exploring your blog today. Looking forward to future posts.

    • Thank you Slklesko! Yes, that’s true. I think we both learn from that kind of people as much as we learn from people like Gandhi or Mandela. And thank you so much for exploring my blog and following me. I really appreciate it. I hope you will enjoy my future posts as much as you did with the previous ones. :-)

I hope your days are filled with bliss, my lovely friend! :-)

  123. In response to your worries about writing in English, I think ultimately, if you write good stories, editors can take care of the minor flaws. I’m a native english speaker, and I still need friends to look over my writing and make sure I don’t have spelling errors, bad grammar, etc. So keep writing! The number one advice I read from successful authors is that it’s not about how good you are, writing is about how much you are willing to persevere. So keep persevering!

    • Thank you very much, for your kind words, Lauren. They’re very encouraging! You’re a beautiful woman with a kind and sweet heart.. :-)

And thank you for visiting my blog and leaving your beautiful footprints here. I really appreciate it.. :-)

      Subhan Zein

  124. Hi there!
Thanks for liking my posts. :)
You’re so good in English! I admire how you organize these words and leading the readers to follow you every line. I know how hard it is to express ones thoughts into a a language that we are not grown up with. You did it very well. Very nicely said.

    Nice to meet you,
    Loty :)

    • Hi Dabawenyo!

Thank you very much for your sweet words! :-) Ah, no, I’m just a learner, a long-life learner. We’re all the same. Everytime we find it difficult, let’s have Khalil Gibran, Joseph Conrad, and Khalid Hosseini in our mind. They didn’t speak English as their first language, and yet they pubslihed in English. We can do the same thing! :-)

Have a great weekend in the Philippines! I have just written a moral story about someone from your country! Hope you will like it! :-)

      Subhan Zein

  125. Thanks for your stopping by my blog, Subhan Zein :)!!
I did read your story about Vietnamese girl, and really like it. I think all of us, sometimes, will fall into that case… The best important thing is we never accept to stay forever in that tiny aquarium…
I always write on my blog in Vietnamese, so I’m scared that you cannot find out more interesting things in there. But it’s really nice if we can meet on Skype or Yahoo or MSN to make friend, to talk about our passion, our favorites. Do you think so? Let me know if you see that way is excited.
Great day to you, dear friend!

    • Hi SweetChocolate, thank you for your visit! I’m glad that you enjoyed my story. I have got some other stories for you, if you’re interested. It’s on the Reflection category, on the right side of the side bar. There you should be able to find some entertaining and inspiring stories. :-)

Feel free to add me on my facebook, and we could use the chat facility in there. My ID is: Subhan Zein. Looking forward to chatting with you!

And have a great day to you too! :-)

  130. I also never thought I could write blog. I appreciated my friends spending their time doing it. I also didnt know the reason I started it at first. I used to thought it was too busy to do it, but now I’m happy spending my time with it. I also love writing, but I’m not a good reader. Sure, by what you said,…it’s impossible to become a good writer without reading anything.

    • You are right, Chhunc! Totally! We can’t be a good writer, without being a good reader. Perhaps you’d be interested in reading some of the great authors I like? Here’s a few: Paulo Coelho, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Salman Rushdie, Joyce Carol Oates, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Khalil Gibran. Try by Googling their name first, and see whether you will like the genre they are writing!

Have a great day, my friend! :-)

      Warm regards,

      Subhan Zein

    • Thank you, Dianne, and thank you for following my blog. I hope you enjoy what I have in store for you..

  132. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’ve been teaching EFL for 10 years now, mostly in Cork, Ireland, but I taught for a little while in Italy too. Doing a MA in linguistics is an idea I toy with. Maybe someday! Lovely blog by the way :-)

    • Hi, Livvy30! Thank you for your comment. Oh, you’ve been teaching EFL for 10 years? Wow! That’s awesome. I’m still a year behind, so I’m a bit embarrassed. Haha. Anyway, yes, you should do an MA in Linguistics or TESOL. I’m sure it’s worth-doing, and besides teaching English is a green passport, right?! So you should definitely do it! :-)

Thanks for stopping by and for following my blog! I hope you enjoy what I’ve got in store for you.. :-)

      Subhan Zein
