Don’t You Fear the Unknown?

*

*

*

You ask, “Don’t you fear the unknown?”

I reply, “Sweetheart, I fear the unknown,

as does everybody else.

Nothing is more terrifying than

crossing the desert without water.

*

Yet the unknown is nothing but mere darkness.

For what is the unknown but the absence of light?

*

Once our heart is open

the light will cast the shadow

and eliminate the darkness.

And then a gleaming smile adorns our face because

the darkness vanishes like it has never existed.

*

When the fears of the unknown vanish

we will walk upon the earth with courage.

We sway in gaiety

to slap the thunder and fold the storm.

Even in the middle of the tempest

we will feel tranquility.

*

Again, what is the unknown but the absence of light?

What is the unknown but an intimate wearing a stranger’s mask?

*

  1. “What is the unknown but the absence of light?”… I like that. To me, all of life is unknown. We *think* we know what a day will hold, but do we? Really? We cannot predict the future but instead must “roll with the punches.” It is good to stop being scared of the darkness and instead be bold. We must turn on the light.

    Great post!

  2. Hello dear Subhan,

  5. Subhan, I know the darkness very well, lived in it for almost two terrible years. When I began to see the sunlight begin to shine there… I went to it little by little… Skip’s voice was like a beacon guiding me through the dark shadows on my path. I could touch my Pups, feel them though I couldn’t really see them… but, they also, were always there. As the light grew brighter on my path… I could see my way out. Yes, you are right… ‘Again, what is the unknown but the absence of light?’ Granny Gee

  9. Subhan, This is a lovely poem. When I read this type of poem, I wonder at my choice to use rhymes, rather than freestyle poetry. Nevertheless, we each have our own voice. Powerful post!

  11. Hi,
It is scary when you leave your comfort zone. Thank you for the poem. It is very encouraging. I have just started charting out unknown territory. I will keep walking it, walking towards the light that I know will appear, but it is not easy. So, I am doing it even though I am afraid.
    Ciao,
    Patricia

    • Hi Patricia,

  12. Subhan, my heart fluttered to read this! So many of us fear the unknown until we realize that’s where our deepest joy is.

  13. Just beautiful, Subhan. I love your choice of photo and this poem. The images that both create add to the mystery. “For what is the unknown but the absence of light?” If we shine a light on the darkness, the mystery is gone.

    • Thank you very much for your lovely comment, Judy. It’s great to have you here and I hope my blog doesn’t disappoint you that you will continue enjoying my blog.

  14. Subain, very thought provoking, but I need to answer with an unequivocal ‘NO.’ Things did quite a turnaround when I received this diagnosis of Shrinking Lung Syndrome that my perspective on life has changed immensely. No longer the believer that all will be well, I don’t feel there’s a darn thing I can do about it. So freeing and sue sera, sera. No more fight and no more fear! Time for pensiveness!

    • Hi Annie,

  16. Wearing a stranger’s mask…reminds me of the Native Peoples saying (not an exact quote here)…”Judge not your fellow until you have walked a mile within his shoes”
We all wear so many masks…a gentle reminder your words to peaceably accept and learn from the dark, the unknown, which we can easily lighten when we take the time to look.

    • Thank you very much, Jules. Thank you for your lovely comment. Hope your visits in my blog have been and will always be a joyful ride. Thank you again, and lovely day to you! :-)

  18. Hi Subhan, there is deep Truth in your poetry, as one reflects on life and wonders what is to be, without the right foundation there is a mask of fear that can’t be removed but when we have the right focus we see the light and the Hope that we were previously blinded to and the fear is no more.

Thank for sharing and my you be greatly blessed.

Christian Love from both of us – Anne.

    • God always has the answer…..

1 John 4:17-19 Herein is our Love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in Love; but perfect Love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in Love. We Love Him, because He first Loved us.

Christian Love from both of us.

  22. Beautiful… it is “like crossing the desert without water.” I always remind myself – darkness is the place from which all light is born. Your line about the “intimate wearing a strangers mask” reminds me bit of a modern day Rumi, who I am very found of. Looking forward to hearing more. What a wonderful open heart you have. What a pleasure to have this opportunity for inspiration. PS, I loved the coffee, treats, and comfort on your about page.

    • Thank you very much. I am very much inspired by Rumi, Gibran, and Hafez. I love their works very much! Thank you for being so kind in commenting. I hope my blog doesn’t disappoint you and that you will continue enjoying each of the posts in this blog. :-)

Thank you again and lovely day to you! :-)

  23. Subhan, thanks for reading all of my blogs fromFriday-6-22-12. A couple of them I have written similar articles before-The Spider and the one about my son. I decided when my creativity was “down”, I would put some of my favorites on this new blog. It looks like we started on wordpress about the same time. I am trying to use more photos and URLs to get more readers. I have been putting “read my work” notices on Facebook-I feel like i am nagging, but it seems that if we want a lot or readers, we have to let people know we are out here! I always enjoy you blog. Its a hot day in the Appalachian Mountains-lots of garden wor has worn me out! Stay cool “down undeia

    • Thank you, Mira Jay. Thank you very much for your lovely comment. May happiness be with you forever and for always.

Lovely day to you, my friend! :-)

      • Hey, yeah take your time, it’s just an award and you deserve it <3

        You too ;)

  25. Beautiful. Subhain- minds me of Kahlil Gibran-Thanks for your kind comment on my blog-I will continue to enjoy yours and hope you will enjoy mine as well. I am glad you write in English- there are people who kindly follow my blog and I cannot read theirs. I look at them any way and enjoy what I can. I only know a little bit of Spanish. I admire that you know other languages. More people in the US should learn about other cultures.

    • Thank you, I am humbly thankful. I guess you could try copying their post and Google-translate it. I do it that way with some of my fellow Turkish, Brazilian, and Italian bloggers. Or, perhaps you could switch your browser to Google Chrome? It’s got a feature that automatically translates a page in other languages into English, with your consent. If you go to Google, then usually they have got a mini ad that offers you to switch your browser to Google Chrome, and you can just download it for free. No hassle.

      Hope this helps! :-)

  26. Beautiful as always. You know, Subhan, i still feel startled when an intimate wears a mask. … but i get your meaning ;-). I want to trust that my close ones will stay recognizable.

    • Thank you, my dear friend, Aitor. Thank you very much, you are right. Giving some light to the darkness and discover the unknown is a beautiful thing to do. Have a wonderful day, my friend! :-)
